XChatX’s standalone messaging app, introduced to the public at Friday. First available on iOS devices, the new app allows users to connect with their Xs to send messages, share files, play music and videos, and chat in groups.
The company first started test XChat publicly and a small group of beta users earlier this year to get their feedback on the new feature.
The XChat program is an important part of the ideal vision of the company, which sees the social network as a jumping off point for other services, such as messaging or payments. (This is the last one too considered as a volunteer program(although not publicly available.)
However, the idea for X to move out of its platform to become its own dedicated app is a departure from Elon Musk’s previous plans to make X a “all apps,” which will provide a one-stop shop for messaging, payments, content creators, purchasing, AI, and more.
Instead, xAI (Musk’s own AI company owner X and and the owners and Musk’s other company SpaceX) now offers several programs to engage consumers with its services.
At launch, the XChat app offers support for messaging and calling, as well as other features it claims are privacy-protected, including the ability to edit and delete messages for anyone in the conversation; support for missing messages; and the ability to block views. X says there are no ads or tracking features in the app.
The company also claims that all messages are stored end-to-end and PIN protected – even if security experts are involved which was previously contested statements of the company.
Security experts had previously warned users that the XChat service seems to be more secure than other messaging programs, such as Signal, when the program was first launched. They will also need to review the dedicated XChat app again, now that it is available, to see if the necessary changes have been made.
In addition to providing a place to have private chats or group chats, XChat is also joining the new X’s Communities, which the company is doing. has decided to close because of the lack of work and the amount of spam. The timing of the story can give XChat the impetus for a new installation, as the community evolves.
Other changes to XChat appear to be still in the works, according to X lead developer Benji Taylor, who laughed that the program is “just the beginning of what we are creating for communications.”
