As AI enters the worlds of text and media, websites are looking to establish rules of use. This week, Wikipedia banned the use of AI-generated text by its authors – although it stopped short of banning AI directly from the website’s content.
In recent policy changesthe site now says “using LLMs to create or rewrite content is prohibited.” This new language changes and makes clear the old, vague language which stated that LLMs “should not be used to create new Wikipedia articles from scratch.”
AI in the Wikipedia article has it to be a matter of debate among a group of many, dedicated editors. 404 Media they say The new policy, which was voted on by the editors of the site, received overwhelming support – 40 to 2.
That said, the new policy still offers the opportunity to continue using AI in other applications.
“Editors are allowed to use LLMs to explain the original text of their manuscripts, as well as to include some of the personal text, as long as the LLM does not introduce its own,” the new law said. “Caution is important, because LLMs can go beyond what you ask them and change the meaning of the word so that it does not correspond to what is mentioned.”
