White Sox anthem singer suffers ‘medical emergency’

During the game, the team explained on social media that Chaney suffered a “medical emergency” on Wednesday, April 15.

“He was treated by emergency personnel at the stadium and remained alert before being taken to hospital for further assessment and treatment.” White Sox release. “The entire White Sox family sends our thoughts and wishes to Gerald and his family and wishes him a speedy recovery.”

Chaney collapsed on the field behind home plate as he performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” commonly known as the Black National Anthem. Reporters at the game reported that he was taken off the field on a stretcher.

“Lift and Every Voice and Sing” is performed in honor of Jackie Robinson Day, which is celebrated annually on April 15.

After Chaney fell to the ground, the start of the game was delayed for 12 minutes. In the end, the Rays defeated the White Sox 8-3.

At the time of publication, the White Sox had not provided an update on Chaney’s condition.

‘Terrible thing, really just hope he’s okay,’ White Sox manager Will Venable Said after the game. “I’m really happy to hear he’s doing fine, but it’s obviously a scary time. Everybody’s been responding really well and doing their best to make sure he’s OK. So, it’s really great news to hear he’s OK. Yeah, I think that’s the most important thing.”

ray manager Kevin Cash Adding, “I’m glad he’s OK. Kudos to the White Sox and everyone who played a role in coming out and telling us they thought he was going to be OK. But I’m sure it was pretty scary for the club and the players. It was a little bit of a dull feeling in the first inning or two.”

Baseball fans rallied around Chaney in the comments on Chicago’s social media post.

“Sending strength and love to Gerald and his family,” one person wrote. “Hopefully he will be healthy again soon.”

Another fan said: “He’s one of the nicest people you could ever want to meet. I’m shocked to see something like this happen. I pray for his speedy recovery!”

“Well wishes from Rays fans too! ❤️‍🩹,” one opposing supporter wrote.
