Uber launched a new feature on Friday that allows customers to return purchases without leaving their home.
The new feature, available through the Uber Eats app, is Uber’s latest attempt to add “stickiness” to its app by offering services that go beyond its ride-hailing and delivery businesses.
There is a limit to this new service, and there is, of course, a fee for the sender. Refunds are calculated based on the time and distance of the sender, according to Uber.
Customers can submit returns for eligible items purchased on Uber Eats, and must follow each store’s return policy. Participation sellers includes Home, Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, GNC, Michael’s Pet Food Express, Pacsun, Petco, and Target. Uber said more vendors will be added in the future.
Uber has also put a limit on these types of prices. Customers can only return items with retail prices greater than $20, according to the company.
Customers can access this update by going to their order history in the app, clicking “Retrieve the item,” and selecting the item. The process is completed when users click “Deliver by courier”. Some customers may be attracted to instant cashback, not to mention skipping the hassle of driving to the dealership, finding a parking spot, and standing in line.
Uber has never tested commercial returns. However, the company has established many other activities outside of its regular business, equestrian businesses and catering businesses.
In 2020, Uber launched a service called Connect that used couriers to pick up and deliver packages to friends, family, or coworkers. It also created Uber Direct, which allowed users to order from selected retailers and have their products delivered to their doorsteps – contactless, a reflection of the Covid-19 pandemic that was sweeping the country at the time.
The peer-to-peer package delivery service, Uber Connect, was expanded in 2023 by a “Bring the Package”. which allows customers to hire an employee to pick up and deliver up to five packages at a time to a post office, UPS, or FedEx location.
