Tomean app that tracks books and book lovers, is closing its doors.
Built on the back of a large and powerful group of BookTok – creators who discuss and review books on TikTok – the application gave readers a place to write and read their books, receive suggestions, and add images of things such as favorite articles or memes, or share lists that match the sound of the book.
The app was one of the many things that helped fuel the growing number of Gen Z readers who are creating posts about books on social media – a group that started out mainly as women promoting their favorite “romance” titles, but has since grown to include readers of all kinds.
But the space to help the community to take part in the book competition still dominates Good reading maybe you’re too full now. Tome, for example, has to compete with several other book-followers with a similar vibe, such as Myth, On the edge, Fortunately, StoryGraph, Libraries, On the page, The value of TBRand others. (TBR programs are not to be confused with book centers The value of TBRwhich also closes in June!)
In a blog post to announce To close, Tome points out the competitive landscape, noting that his 100,000-strong readership hasn’t reached the level needed to sustain a social media app that supports memes, GIFs, and videos. The company said that ultimately the project was “not financially viable to continue operating.”
Tome said the program will be officially shut down on May 29, when it will cease to function as the servers will be shut down. The site will also be closed for the day, the company said.
The document also instructs Tome users on how to export their data, including text and images and a spreadsheet of their reading changes.
