TikTok is launching a new “Campus Hub,” the company told TechCrunch in an email Thursday. The new center features dedicated college group chats and meals designed to help students stay connected to their campus communities, even when they’re away for the summer.
The new facility builds on the program’s campus authentication modewhich was launched last August and allows users to add their colleges to their TikTok profile and browse their school’s list of students to find and connect with others at their school. The module is available in more than 6,000 universities through a partnership with TikTok UNIDAYSA student verification platform that verifies student identity.
Once users verify that they are students, they will gain access to their new dedicated school.
Students can create and join group chats with over 300 friends. These group chats are only for verified students from one school. TikTok says these chats can be used to connect, schedule reunions, or continue conversations over the summer.
Although these chats can be useful during the summer, TikTok can also have the goal of making students use its program for daily communication at school, such as class discussions or clubs that take place on other platforms such as Discord, Facebook Messenger, or Instagram.
As for the new college food, users will see a personalized feed that contains mixes submitted by verified students and related to their university. TikTok says these feeds will allow students to stay connected to school life, practices, and updates wherever they are.
The new feature is reminiscent of the early days of Facebook, when the platform was built around college campuses and required people to sign up with a valid “.edu” email address to connect with classmates and meet people at their university.
It is worth noting that TikTok is not the only giant that looks to make it easier for college students to communicate, like Instagram with Meta. released an episode last year it’s similar to what TikTok guarantees for the school, because it also allows students in the US to add their college or university to their profile and browse the list of students from their school.
