Luckily for everyone, the recent Tony Award-winning Broadway revival has been filmed for posterity and will be streaming for the first time on Netflix this weekend. Jonathan Grove Starring Franklin Shepherd, a successful filmmaker who started out as a struggling songwriter. Told in reverse chronological order, the musical chronicles the once-close friendship between Shepard and frequent collaborator Charley Kringus (Daniel Radcliffe) and theater critic Mary Flynn (Lindsay Mendes). As the years pass, the storyline jumps from the bitter end of their friendship to its bright beginning, with musical sequences detailing how each of them disliked the other.

If you’re a Broadway fan, you’ll probably already be watching this no matter what I write. But if you’ve never experienced a Sondheim musical, this version is probably the best you’ll get – at least for the next two decades. Groff and Radcliffe, who won Tony Awards for their roles, are best friends who gradually turn into mortal enemies.
