A young boy goes viral after an encounter with Grit, and you’d expect a surprising face-to-face meeting with a 7-foot-tall, wide-eyed, orange-furred mascot: pure panic, followed by a slap.
In videos posted on TikTok bar stool exercise In April 2016, the child was seen wearing a jersey and sitting in the stands at a Philadelphia Flyers game. His mother kept telling him to turn around, and Perseverance slowly crept up behind him. A woman in the background explained that this was his first time competing and that he was the birthday boy.
The crowd around him kept cheering, trying to get the kid to watch. When he finally turned around, Gritty was inches from his face.
The kid hit him directly in the mouth. Then immediately started crying.
The comments section of this video provides exactly the kind of content worthy of screenshotting for a group chat.
“The most accurate response to grit 🤣,” one person wrote.
“My husband goes to Flyers games for the team. I only go to games for the Grit. 😂,” said another.
“Mental damage 🤣😭🤣,” a third added.
“He said he was more of a rabid fan,” someone joked.
Others sided with the kid. “Tenacity is scary,” one commenter argued.
“Best mascot in professional sports,” retorted another.
“I love the @Philadelphia Flyers, but I feel the same way about @Gritty,” another wrote.

“This reminds me of the ‘Mascot’ episode of RL Stine’s Ghost Hour!!” one user wrote.
Another responded: “Honestly he does remind me of a show that gave me goosebumps where we had a kid trapped inside a mascot.”
They referenced a character from Season 2 Episode 8 The Ghost Hour: The Series by RL Stine. In this episode, two students, Willie and Drake, try to replace the school’s creepy mascot, Big Yellow, with a new wolf mascot. When the replacement mysteriously disappears, they discover that Rhubarb is actually a terrifying creature that eats anyone who threatens his status.
A toddler’s intuition may be right.
Grit is the official mascot of the Philadelphia Flyers. Standing 7 feet tall, with unblinking eyes, covered from head to toe in orange fur and a shaggy beard, he has a unique appearance. His edgy personality and moody attitude have pushed the limits of what is acceptable as a team mascot.
This hockey season is even more special for the character. During Flyers home games, Gritty takes over Section 122 as Gritty’s Chaos Corner. Fans in the area had a front-row seat to his infamous skits and pranks throughout the game.
Those sitting in the messy corner of the “splash zone” should keep their heads above water. Fortitude has a lot of tricks up its sleeve, including silly string attacks, popcorn rain, and clumping battles.
