The Trump administration on Friday launched a new website that will contain a list of “new, never-before-seen” files about UFOs, according to the Pentagon. (And yes, it seems we’re OK with calling them UFOs again, as the link to this new site has it. war.gov/ufo.)
In public to announce and the Department of Defense – which, under Trump’s leadership, was renamed the Department of War – the original files on the site will include those containing unclassified videos (UAP), photographs, and original documents from across the US government. The equipment was inspected for safety, but many “have yet to be inspected to rule out any issues,” the department said.
The collection will also grow over time as additional files are released on a “rolling basis,” it said.
The release of the documents follows a December 2017, leaked story The New York Times, Politicsand others, about $22 million for the Pentagon’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP), which was investigating military incidents and unidentified objects.
Since then, the interest in UAPs, which is now the modern term for UFOs, has grown among people, increasing the concern about what is in our space, as it was with 2024 US drone sightings. Determining what is unexplained has been difficult because our sky looks so different than it did years ago, thanks to things like SpaceX launches and satellites. This is why the list of supported military files is interesting.
The issue of government funding for the Pentagon’s program has also had an impact pop culture in recent years, as seen in films like “Jules” of 2023 about the relationship between a man and an alien who fell behind him; “Bugonia,” which deals with the conspiracy theories surrounding the aliens in our midst; and in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film “Disclosure Day,” which mentions government secrets on the subject.
Years ago, such a release of UFO files would have been a big issue, but today many Americans are more concerned about everyday problems, such as the Iran war and its effect on gas prices, the increasing cost of living, the loss of jobs that are challenged by AI, health care, climate change, and other important issues.
According to the Pentagon, the release of the UFO files is the result of an interagency effort, the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE). The project includes the White House, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the Department of Energy (DOE), the DOD’s All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and parts of other US intelligence agencies.
Before this, without 404 Media page noted in March that the Executive Office of the President had registered the domain aliens.gov; however, the site is currently inactive.
