AI gateway developer OpenRouterwhich was launched in 2023, has raised $113 million in Series B funding led by CapitalG, the development fund of Google’s parent company Alphabet. Even the startup did not reveal its new rating, The New York Times reports that it reached about $ 1.3 billion after money.
This is a significant increase from the estimated $547 million that was reached a year ago, according to PitchBook, after raising $40 million in Series A funding in June 2025. That round was led by Andreessen Horowitz and Menlo Ventures, with participation from Sequoia.
What a difference a year makes. Since then, the role of AI has shifted from education to, now, assistants. And OpenRouter’s AI gateway has stepped up in response. The portal helps businesses and other AI users to choose between different types of tasks in order to control the cost or increase the accuracy and accuracy of the incoming task.
OpenRouter offers access to more than 400 brands, including Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, xAI, and DeepSeek, it says. It claims 8 million global users and 100 trillion tokens processed per month, or about 25 trillion per week. That’s a 5x increase from the 5 trillion tokens they were processing per week six months ago.
OpenRouter’s success means that the AI model is increasingly becoming an invisible, flexible engine for AI applications.
Rather than being a future where startups or businesses settle for a traditional option — perhaps creating a more powerful metaphor for the moment — OpenRouter’s growth suggests something else. Companies don’t have the mindset of being locked into a single vendor model like they did with their various SaaS providers. The multi-generational future is already here.
