OpenAI Thursday GPT-5.5 releaseits latest version of AI, which the company calls “the smartest and most user-friendly” yet. The algorithm comes with increased potential in many areas, with OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman saying it’s also bringing the company closer to the launch of an OpenAI “superapp.”
In a call with reporters, Brockman said the new model was a big step forward in “smart and smart use.”
“This prototype is a real step toward the kind of computing we expect in the future — but it’s just one step, and we hope to see many more in the future,” Brockman said. “It’s faster, it’s more critical because of fewer signals compared to things like 5.4. So that means there’s a limit to AI that’s available to businesses and consumers, which is part of our goal.”
Brockman said the model was a step forward create a “superapp” — a multi-purpose, Swiss Army knife of software — that Brockman and co-founder Sam Altman have discussed setting up. Co-founders imagine combining ChatGPT, Codex, and AI browser into one unified service that can help business customers. In particular, the concept of “superapp” is also a hot topic and Altman’s rival (and former OpenAI partner) Elon Musk, who has said he wants to turn X (formerly Twitter) into his own so-called superapp.
OpenAI has been released his last example just last month, with early releases in December and, before that, November. The company continues to develop new models at a rapid pace, which company officials said should continue in the future. “We’re seeing big changes in a short period of time, big changes in a short period of time,” said Jakub Pachocki, chief scientist of OpenAI. “In fact, I would say, like, I think the last two years have been incredibly slow.”
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 is designed to be useful in a variety of areas, including basic business areas such as agent code and information processing, as well as in general AI experiments such as mathematics and scientific research. The company also released data on Thursday showing strong performance for various brands. Compared to its previous models, as well as models from competitors Google and Anthropic (such as Gemini 3.1 Pro and Claude Opus 4.5), 5.5 always scores more, according to OpenAI.
Competition between OpenAI and Anthropic is not far from the discussion, and GPT-5.5 provided another opportunity for the two companies to compare themselves to each other. A reporter at the press conference asked if GPT 5.5. will have the same skills as Mytha recently announced cybersecurity tool by Anthropic. (Mythos has faced controversy in recent days due to a report of unauthorized access to the program.) Mia Glaese, a member of the technical staff at OpenAI, said that GPT-5.5 will have a significant impact on the way the company deploys its models for digital security. “We have a strong and long-term cyber security strategy, and we have developed a robust strategy for safe evacuation,” Glaese said.

Mark Chen, director of research at OpenAI, said that GPT-5.5 was better for computing than its predecessors, and said that the model “shows benefits for scientific and technological research,” saying that the company believes that it “can help professional scientists move forward.” Chen also said that it could help in the discovery of drugs, a region that has shown the level of corporate interest over the past few years.
GPT 5.5. has been widely available since Thursday, according to OpenAI. The company says that the version is being sent to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users of ChatGPT, while 5.5 Pro is going to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users.
