Microsoft says it has over 20M Copilot users, and they’re using it

Although it is long-term awareness that no one uses Copilot, Microsoft said on Wednesday that its users and applications are growing on the AI ​​tool that is baked into M365 applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook email.

M365 Copilot now has 20 million paid Copilot seats, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said during the company’s quarterly earnings call.

The company has quadrupled the number of companies paying for more than 50,000 seats, Nadella said, noting that Bayer, Johnson & Johnson, Mercedes, and Roche have more than 90,000 seats. He pointed to the deal announced earlier this week and Accenture for over 740,000 seats. “Our senior copilot has won so far,” he said.

In addition, he insists that people are using, chatting with Copilot like they do with email.

“Copilot inquiries per user were up nearly 20% quarter over quarter. To put that into perspective, weekly engagement is now on par with Outlook,” he said. “It’s like a habit of using it a lot every day.”

He also emphasized that Copilot does not rely on any other platform, such as OpenAI.

“Now you have the opportunity to interact with multiple models randomly, and intelligently control the traffic in assistants with criticism and advice, you can use multiple models to create better solutions,” he said.

Microsoft 365 supports Anthropic’s Claude, for example.

In fact, Morgan Stanley’s Keith Weiss said on Wednesday, “The numbers for Microsoft 365 Copilot are very impressive and I think ahead of most people’s expectations.”

Agent mode is one feature that’s working, noting that “as of last week, Agent mode is now default on Copilot and Word Excel and PowerPoint.”
