When Spirit Airlines shut down Saturday night – canceling all flights, laying off 17,000 employees, and telling ticket holders to just leave. don’t come to the airport – people were sad but needy. For all its ugliness, Spirit was cheap. Then one of them had an idea.
Hunter Peterson, voice actor with frequent complaints, wrote TikTok asking: what if 20% of American adults drop the price of the Spirit tree and just . . . did he buy it? He called it “Spirit 2.0: Humanized.” In a matter of hours he threw down the website – a good, one-hour job, by his own admission – and by Sunday, 36,000 “starter supporters” had pledged nearly $23 million, crashing his servers in the process.
There is no real money. These are non-binding promises. Also you should know: the actual cost of acquiring and re-establishing an airline runs into the billions. Peterson knows this. In a video posted earlier today, he shamelessly attempted to recruit airline lawyers, PR people, and attorneys with one word to ask: “Help?”
“I know what I don’t know,” he told his followers, but “you’re committing to this, so I’m doing something.”
