“He’s excited about becoming a father. He’s excited about his life, working with kids and the birth of his daughter,” Jones said in a report published on Tuesday, April 14.
She added, “That was my brother, my only biological brother, same mom, same dad. I’m heartbroken. I’m hurt. My brother is gone. I can’t even deal with the pain.”
Payton-Jones died from injuries sustained when her sedan collided head-on with a pickup truck, overturned and burst into flames. Three people in the truck suffered minor injuries in the accident.
The Gainesville, Florida, native played in the NFL from 2018 to 2022, bouncing between five different teams. He had 48 career tackles before moving to the XFL in 2023, which merged with the United Football League in 2024. He finished his career with the St. Louis Warhawks of the UFL.

Becht, 48, wrote: “My heart is broken to hear the sad news that Chris Peyton Jones has passed away. Chris was a great player, great teammate and incredible person. Chris had a great time coaching and spending the past two seasons in St. Louis. I loved this young man. I, my staff and all of the teammates who loved and worked with him send our deepest respect and condolences to the Peyton Jones family.”
The UFL also released a statement acknowledging Payton Jones’ passing.
“The United Football League is in mourning following the tragic passing of former St. Louis Warhawks defensive back Chris Payton-Jones,” the league said in a statement shared on social media on Sunday. “Chris was a beloved teammate and locker room leader who demonstrated the importance of hard work, determination and resilience throughout his career.”
The statement continued, “Equally important, Chris was always a bright soul who enjoyed his time off the court with everyone throughout the league during his three-year tenure. From fan appearances and media engagement, to his own content creation and sharing the highs and lows of his personal journey, Chris conducted himself with humility and integrity. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, teammates and everyone affected by this loss.”
