Infrastructure giant Itron has reportedly been hacked

The American technology company Iron has confirmed that it was affected by a cyberattack in mid-April and that hackers found some of its methods.

For legally required filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission late FridayItron said it had been “notified” that it had an intruder in its systems. The company did not say who tipped it off, but added that it had fired the hackers and had not seen anything that compromised its internal systems.

Itron did not specify the type of cyberattack it experienced, such as whether ransomware was deployed or whether the company was directly connected to hackers. It is also not immediately clear what, if any, cyberattack involved the company’s systems.

The company said it had not detected any unauthorized activity in the “client-facing part of its systems,” and indicated that the breach may be limited to its IT network.

Itron said it has also notified legal protections.

The Liberty Lake, Washington-based company provides energy management technology, including water, gas, and electricity. The company provides Internet-connected utility meters to more than 110 million homes and businesses, according to his website. Iron has thousands of customers, including cities and towns, and operations in more than 100 countries, its website reads.

Itron said it had implemented its own emergency and backup plans, and that its operations “continue on all aspects,” but warned that it may need to create backups of legal and regulatory information. This suggests that the company may have experienced a data breach, which could trigger further legal notices under data breach notification laws.

It is unclear who, if anyone, at Itron is responsible for cybersecurity. An Itron spokesperson did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.
