Indonesia’s Dukono volcano erupts, sending massive ash into the air

Three hikers, including two foreigners and a local resident, died after Indonesia’s Dukono volcano erupted on Friday.

Mount Dukono is an active volcano on the island of Halmahera, located in eastern Sulawesi. The volcano erupted at 07:41 local time (22:41 GMT on Thursday), sending ash 10 kilometers into the sky, according to Indonesia’s Volcanology Survey Agency.

Rescue workers have found all survivors of the 20 hikers who went missing after the volcano erupted. Most people have been evacuated from the mountain and are receiving treatment in hospitals, but two porters remain on the mountain to help recover the bodies.

Officials said the group, which included nine Singaporeans, climbed the volcano despite a climbing ban.
