In Japan, divorce separates parents from their children. Could a change in the law end sole custody?

That year, women retained custody in more than 86 percent of cases, and joint custody arrangements accounted for only a fraction of all agreements reached. That year, more than 164,000 children under the age of 18 across Japan were affected by custody arrangements due to their parents’ divorce.
