Craftsman they can be known for their bravery “Stop Hiring People”. but the truth is that every startup needs to assemble the right team if they want to grow. The the rapid development of AI is creating AI workers to outsource and engage with customers. This week on Build Mode, Isabelle Johannessen spoke with Jaspar Carmichael-Jack, co-founder and CEO of Artisan about the early days of growing their team and the mistakes that could have killed them before they got off the ground.
Making the wrong hires or filling the wrong positions are mistakes that multiply quickly. They waste time, they drag, and they often create havoc that can be dangerous when they are starting to grow.
“I’ve made a lot of mistakes in hiring — like, a lot in every position,” Carmichael-Jack said. “We’ve probably hired over 100 people to get the 40 people we have now.” But each mistake brought an important lesson that the founding team was able to follow moving forward.
It’s much harder to keep a team of 50 people on track and aligned with the mission than a team of 10. “I thought we’d grow faster if I hired all these people and built this big team, but it actually makes it harder to scale,” Carmichael-Jack said.
No one in the starting group should have a break. Hiring should be done only when there is enough for the team to handle.
An impressive CV with experience at other tech giants doesn’t always indicate someone who is ready to get down to business. The skills needed to succeed in a large, multi-resourced organization are not always the same as those needed for a startup. A candidate’s knowledge and interest are more important than fancy logos on a CV.

Someone who is too far along in their career may not be able to handle the initial chaos and may expect a plan that never existed. On the other hand, a borrower who is too young will not have the ability to expand his career.
The recruitment process should be patient and consistent, even if you are an enthusiastic person. At this point, quick action is best if someone isn’t a good fit for the team.
“In the beginning, we were very slow. So we would sit on a decision for weeks or months without doing anything and try to help them a little, but not really, just floating around. “You can tell if someone is not working, and often they do.”
Carmichael-Jack’s early mistakes are a reminder that recruiting isn’t just a job; and strategic one. A wrong payment won’t just slow you down; it can reshape your culture, lower your standards, and make any future career difficult. The accuracy, however, adds up quickly.
In the end, even a company building an AI workforce learned what every startup does: You can’t grow a company without people – they just have to be the right people.
