Meghan Trainorbest friend Chris Olson The singer is firing back at the haters after she abruptly canceled her upcoming tour.
“So I guess now that it’s public knowledge that Megan Trainor has canceled her tour, and one of the posts saying that happened, you can imagine the level of vitriol in the comments section,” Olson, 28, said in a statement. TikTok video Thursday, April 16th. “This is a bigger conversation, not just how she and people feel about Meghan or whatever they want to say, it’s what’s happening online and, like I said, how malicious the comment sections can be.”
Olson went on to note how “intrinsically we knew” the comment section on the video “wasn’t going to be good” and how “sad” that was.
“The question that often comes to my mind is why and what is the end goal? Because of course, the goal could be to make other people laugh because you said something mean but you thought was funny. The goal could be to hurt the person you’re commenting on,” he continued. “If you want to hurt someone, what’s the purpose of hurting that person? Just to hurt them and then you go on with your day and that’s it, or is it to hurt them and hope they do something about it?”
Olson added that he had “received death threats before” and knew it meant someone “wanted you to leave” and was said in the “sternest way possible.”
“But even if that person you really dislike does move on, quits his job, decides not to be seen by you or the public anymore, there are still going to be people that annoy you, there are still going to be people that you don’t like that you have to deal with. It’s a part of life and you can’t get them all away,” he continued. “So really, this energy is just going to continue to be wasted, and it’s impossible to empathize with people like this because in my darkest days, I would never have imagined trying to put this energy on someone else, especially someone I didn’t know, over the internet.”
Olson believes people who spread hate online are “wasting” their energy because “it’s so easy to avoid things you don’t like.”
“I guess I just wish I could understand more why someone would do this, why someone would use their energy in this way,” he concluded. “But I can’t even sympathize with it. I can’t understand it and it just makes me sad to see it.”
