It’s a deal most families wouldn’t expect to find at a fast food restaurant: put away your phone and get a free dessert.
The Chick-fil-A store in Towson Place, Maryland, is offering free Icedream® cones to customers who agree to store their cell phones in a container during their meal. The promotion, called the Chick-fil-A® Mobile Partner Challenge, is a limited in-store event rather than a nationwide rollout.
Scroll below to learn all about the offer.
The concept is very simple. Based on shared signage X account complexthe description is as follows:
That’s it. There’s no app to download, no loyalty points threshold, no purchase minimum above what you’ve already eaten. All you need is a “chicken coop” — a designated container — to put your equipment in, and eat chicken sandwiches like it’s 2005.
The Chick-fil-A Towson Place store is also promoting the challenge in Facebook postpointed out:
“Join Chick-fil-A Towson Place’s Dining Cell Phone Cabinet Challenge. Ask a team member for a cell phone cabinet, put all the phones in the cabinet, and enjoy your meal together without distractions. When your table is finished, let a team member know and everyone will receive an Icedream Cone as a reward. Are you up for the challenge?”
If you’ve ever looked around the dining room of a restaurant and noticed the entire family scrolling in silence, you weren’t imagining it. according to a Study in 202368% of households have someone using a mobile phone while eating with others.
And here’s the kicker: most people don’t even like it. The same study found that 65% of respondents disliked it and 42% thought it was rude to use their phones while eating.
It’s a startling disconnect – most people are bothered by the use of mobile phones during meals, but it’s found in more than two-thirds of households anyway. This is one of those habits that most people consider problematic but haven’t quite figured out how to break.
Before you start planning your road trip to Maryland, it bears repeating: This plan is not a nationwide one. This is Chick-fil-A testing the idea in one location, and the company has given no indication it plans to expand the challenge to other stores.
Still, the concept has clearly gained traction online, with the posts gaining traction across platforms. This appeal is easy to understand. It’s a low-stakes, feel-good challenge that requires only a small sacrifice—putting down your phone for 20 minutes—in exchange for free ice cream and maybe a real conversation with the person sitting across from you.
It remains to be seen whether other Chick-fil-A locations or competing chains will take notice. But now, if you dine at a Towson Place restaurant, the chicken coop is waiting for you.
