India has emerged as the largest user base for ChatGPT Images 2.0 since its launch installation last weekOpenAI said Thursday. However, third-party data reviewed by TechCrunch points to a more global response, with lower growth combined with sharper markets in emerging markets.
ChatGPT Graphics 2.0, the latest upgrade to OpenAI graphics, is designed to handle the most complex concepts and create detailed graphics, including accurate text in multiple languages. The company’s early visuals show users — mostly in India, its biggest market — using it to create visuals like avatars, stylized images, and fictional images.
Information shared by Sensor Tower and Similarweb and TechCrunch suggests that the release has caused a mixed response around the world. Downloads of the ChatGPT app increased 11% week-on-week following launch, according to Sensor Tower, but the overall benefit of the activity was modest, with daily users and shares increasing by about 1%. Similar online data also shows a slight increase in ChatGPT’s global online traffic, up about 1.6% week over week over the same period.
However, Sensor Tower’s data shows some emerging markets – including Pakistan, Vietnam, and Indonesia – saw significant increases in ChatGPT app downloads, with a 79% week-over-week increase at the time of release.
India, meanwhile, remained a major source of employment at the time of release. Sensor Tower estimates show that ChatGPT was downloaded about 5 million times in India during its opening week, compared to about 2 million in the US, although growth was slower week-over-week. Similar online data also shows a slight improvement in engagement, with daily active users in India increasing by an average of 3.4% week-on-week over the same period.
In India, past experiences show ChatGPT Images 2.0 being used as a form of self-expression. Instead of just working, users are creating studio images from everyday photos, media-ready images, and visual effects that put themselves in the center, OpenAI said.
The fundamentals also examine how AI imaging tools are being used in different ways across markets. While the majority of Indian users are thriving, the growth in countries like Pakistan and Indonesia shows the need for new users in emerging markets after the launch.

The launch of OpenAI’s Images 2.0 comes amid growing competition for AI image creation. Google’s original image viewer, original Nano Bananaalso saw a solid early hit in India, which shows how the country has become an important market for photography.
With the release of the new ChatGPT Graphics, OpenAI is pushing forward with improvements such as better translation of non-Latin words, including Hindi and Bengali, with a new “thinking” capability that allows it to change the output and make several changes from the same time.
Beyond images and avatars, OpenAI said that users of Image 2.0 in India are experimenting with a wider range of formats – from newspaper images to tarot screens and fashion billboards. Users are also using the AI tool to restore old photos and create video clips, the company said, showing the first ways to use it more.
