Apple has agreed to pay $250 million to settle it class action lawsuit on how it marketed its AI features before the launch of the iPhone 16. The Financial Times he was the first to announce the news.
The lawsuit alleges that Apple is exaggerating the scope of what Apple Intelligence can bring, which includes a highly modified version of the assistant, Siri. The complaint alleges that the company created the impression that advanced AI capabilities would be available to users sooner than they actually were. In particular, the critics say that Apple increased the readiness and functionality of these products, especially the promised Siri, which has not yet been implemented.
As a result, the complaint says, people who bought the iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 believed they were paying for expensive AI tools that weren’t available at the time of purchase. The lawsuit framed this as false advertising, and alleged that Apple’s advertising influenced purchasing decisions based on insufficient or delayed information.
Apple has not admitted wrongdoing in court, but has decided to settle the case rather than pursue legal action. Under the proposed deal, eligible US customers who purchased an iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 between June 10, 2024 and March 29, 2025 can receive up to $95 off each device.
Apple has been showing off a high-end version of Siri since its unveiling Apple Intelligence in 2024 at WWDC. The expected changes are waiting helping Siri work like modern AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude. The promoted event is said to be powered by Google Geminialthough new reports suggest that the company’s iPhone operating system may allow it users choose from a number of different main language versions of the other group.
The settlement comes ahead of Apple’s annual conference June 8where the company is expected to preview Siri’s AI-enhanced version.
