Alex Menninger: Former Arsenal goalkeeper dies after car hit by train

“Alexander Manninger is an outstanding ambassador for Austrian football, both on and off the pitch,” said Austrian Football Federation sporting director Peter Schottl.

“His professionalism, calmness and reliability make him an integral part of the team and the national team.

“His achievements deserve the utmost respect and will be unforgettable.”

Salzburg police said emergency personnel used a defibrillator on Manninger while he was alone in the car after he was rescued from the car, but they were unable to revive him.

Police also said the train driver was not injured.

Manninger began his career at hometown club Red Bull Salzburg and has played for 14 teams across Europe, including Siena, Juventus, Udinese and Augsburg.

he signed a Short-term contract with Liverpool In 2016, he was 39 years old but did not participate in the game.

While at Arsenal, Manninger served primarily as David Seaman’s understudy, but took over for the injured England goalkeeper at the end of the 1997–98 season.

That season, Manninger helped Arsenal beat West Ham United on penalties in the sixth round of the FA Cup and impressed in a memorable win against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Manninger was named Premier League Player of the Month for March 1998.
