YouTube releases AI playlists for Premium users

YouTube is introducing a new AI-powered playlist feature that allows Premium users on iOS and Android to use voice prompts to create playlists.

Users can go to the Library tab, click the “New” button, and select the “AI playlist” option to start. They can use words or phrases to write what they want, such as “raging death metal,” “sad post rock,” “progressive house mix for a chill party,” “indie pop” or “90s classic hits,” to create a playlist.

YouTube has been toying with using AI to create playlists for a while. In July 2024, the company was testing a feature to allow people to create fixed radios using instructions in the US

Other works against it like Spotify, Amazon Music and Deezerthey also released an AI-driven playlist or radio interface.

YouTube has been trying to make its Premium plans more attractive to users. Earlier this week, the company began banning it free users to view lyrics on the YouTube Music app. The company told TechCrunch that the ban was a trial run “with a small number of ad-supported users,” and that music tracks are available to most users for free.

Google has seen growth in its subscription business, and YouTube is an important part of this segment. Earlier this month, the company said it has now done so 325 million paid users on Google One and YouTube Premium.
