Woman kills newborn immediately after giving birth at homeless camp


A woman has been charged with murdering a newborn baby she allegedly gave birth to at a homeless camp in California.

The Ventura County District Attorney announced in a statement Press release Tuesday, February 10, Marisol Flores Facing a single charge of murder and assault of a child resulting in death.

Flores, 30, allegedly gave birth on Sunday, February 8, at a homeless encampment along West Vineyard Avenue in Oxnard, California, prosecutors said.

The day before the alleged murder, witnesses claimed they saw a pregnant Flores around a homeless encampment. According to prosecutors, witnesses saw her again on February 8 and noted that she was no longer pregnant and did not appear to have a child.

“Flores is accused of killing the infant shortly after birth,” the release said. “The infant’s body was found inside the camp and showed clear signs of blunt force trauma.”

After the baby’s body was discovered, police called 911 “to inquire about the birth and complications that occurred during the baby’s birth.” Press release Shared by the Oxnard Police Department.

Police were subsequently dispatched to the location and fire and emergency services arrived just after 11am. Emergency crews attempted life-saving measures on the baby, but the baby could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, police said Flores was taken to a hospital to receive medical attention.

At the scene, emergency responders “noticed suspicious injuries to the infant and shared their findings with police personnel on scene,” according to the release.

Investigators from the department’s Family Preservation and Major Crimes Units assigned to the case discovered “additional information that led them to believe Flores was responsible for killing her day-old baby.” However, the release did not say what that information was or what was disclosed.

Following the investigation, Flores was arrested and taken into custody on February 8.

Flores has been released on $500,000 bail, according to a news release from the Ventura County District Attorney.

It was unclear whether Flores entered a plea or retained legal representation following his arrest.

Flores is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment hearing on the afternoon of Friday, February 13.
