A former Wisconsin store owner and local TV gardening expert was attacked in Antigua just before the holidays.
Around 11 a.m. on December 19, 2025, Karen JohnsonThe 66-year-old was reportedly shot in the head by an unnamed male suspect while on a horseback trip on the island, ultimately killing her.
“Emergency medical services transported the victim to the Sir Leicester Bird Medical Centre, where he was treated for serious head injuries,” the Royal Antigua and Barbuda Police Force said in a statement. Although Johnson received medical attention for several days after the initial attack, he was pronounced dead at 10:17 pm local time on December 26, 2025. A suspect in connection with the incident has been detained by police and is “assisting” authorities with ongoing “investigations”, according to the Royal Constabulary. No further information was released regarding the description or identity of the male suspect.
“The Police Department expresses its condolences to the family and loved ones of Karen Johnson on the tragic passing of Karen Johnson,” the statement concluded.
It’s unclear whether Johansson was living on the Caribbean island or just visiting when she died, but based on her social media posts, it appears she traveled to the island at least occasionally.
Back in October, the gardening expert shared a photo of herself Facebook Lounging on a chair on the beach with a tropical drink in hand. In the photo, she is wearing a pink and purple flower-patterned dress and sunglasses, smiling at the camera.
“Another beautiful day in paradise,” she captioned the snap. “Mom always said there would be days like this…thank you mom.”
After Johnson’s death, she was remembered by Wisconsin locals for her many appearances on television shows. news 3 now’s “Green Gardener” segment, during which she shares various facts about plants as well as gardening tips and tricks. She also worked with her siblings Lyn and Gary at Johannsen’s Greenhouse, a home gardening center in Madison, Wisconsin, founded by her father in the late 1950s. However, the store eventually closed its doors for good in 2013.
“My dad never really had a vision,” Karen told News 3 Now at the time. “You know, it was a cute little business and he loved it, but he never realized what was going to happen. What my mom, (my) siblings and I did, we actually put 20 pounds in a 5-pound bag and we made it work.”
