Australian children’s music group The Wiggles issued a statement after two of its members appeared in a music video for a song that clearly alludes to drug use.
In a deleted clip of musician Keli Holiday’s new song “Ecstasy,” Blue Wiggle Anthony Field and his nephew Dominic Field, who plays Wisdom Tree, can be seen dancing in the background.
A spokesman for The Wiggles said the band “does not condone” drug use “in any form” and that the video was made without the band’s approval.
According to Australian media reports, the TikTok video was viewed more than 92,000 times before being deleted.
“We are aware that a video circulating on social media has caused concern among many parents and professionals and we want to address this issue directly,” the organization said in a statement to The West Australian.
“The Wiggles do not support or condone drug use in any form. The content shared was not created or approved by us and we have requested that it be removed.
“While Keli Holiday is a friend of The Wiggles, the video and added music were created independently without our knowledge.”
The video was filmed at the TikTok Awards earlier this month, when the band members appeared on stage alongside Holiday, whose real name is Adam Hyde, to perform his song “Dancing 2.”
Holiday shared the video on TikTok with the caption, “The Wiggles get it,” to promote his new single “Ecstasy.” The song’s chorus lyrics are: “Hey girl, come dance with me. You and your pockets full of ecstasy.”
A spokesperson for The Wiggles told The West Australian newspaper that the band’s performance at the awards ceremony was “family-friendly” and that the video was “edited separately without our knowledge”.
Created in 1991 as part of a university assignment, The Wiggles has become an international phenomenon among young children. Anthony Fields is the only original member of the group still remaining with the group.
Keli Holiday is a solo project from Hyde, also known as one of the electronic dance duo Peking Duk.
