Steven Spielberg once refused to direct Ben Affleck In movies, filmmakers Mike Binder Claim.
while appearing on a recent episode Stephen Baldwinof”a bad movieDuring the podcast, Binder, 67, said he and Spielberg, 79, had been in talks about the latter directing the film. small town manThe film was released in 2006 and starred the 53-year-old Affleck as a hot Hollywood secret agent.
“He said, ‘We have to do something together. I want you to write something for me,'” Binder said of Spielberg. “Back then, we were all living in a stockade and we talked about power and struggle.”
Binder said Spielberg originally planned to direct the project, but later changed his mind and agreed to produce the film through his studio, DreamWorks. Binder later met with Affleck to discuss starring in the lead role.
“We made a deal that he would do it, we shook hands and he would do it,” Binder recalled of Affleck. However, Spielberg allegedly refused to participate if Argo Stars were chosen for the project. “I called Steven and Steven said, ‘No. Can’t do it with him. We just screwed up a movie with him and he’s dealing with the whole J.Lo thing right now and I have other issues with him,'” Binder said. (Affleck began dating Lopez, 56, in 2002 and proposed to her the same year. After receiving harsh public attention, the two called off their wedding and parted ways in 2004. The exes rekindled their relationship in 2021 and married the following year. In August 2024, Lopez files for divorce. The spin-off will be completed in early 2025. )
Spielberg went on to claim that Affleck abused his son during a pool game.
“My son was a little boy and he was playing in the pool and he came out of the pool and Ben came in fully clothed and my son pushed Ben into the pool,” Spielberg said, according to Binder. “‘Ben got so mad at him that he came out of the pool and picked him up and threw him back in the pool and made my son cry.'”
Binder questions what the point of the story is.
“I said, ‘Well, does it matter?'” he recalled. “He said, ‘I just don’t like working with him. Plus his last two movies have flopped miserably. Find someone else. Anyone but him. He’s cold as hell.’ I said, ‘Okay, Steven.'”
When Binder told Affleck’s team that Spielberg wasn’t interested in him, Affleck had an inkling of why.
“Ben called me and he said, ‘Did Steven Spielberg tell you that I threw his kid in the water? Is that true? Is that why I’m not in your movie?'” Binder claimed. “I said, ‘No, he didn’t say’ – ‘Yes, he did! He told you I threw his baby in the water. That’s why I’m not in the movie.'”
Affleck does continue to star About small town men, It was eventually produced by Sunlight Productions and released direct to DVD in 2007. The film tells the story of Jack Giamoro, played by Affleck, whose perfect life is disrupted by his wife (Rebecca Romijn) is deceiving him.
When Affleck directs a drama Argo Won the 2013 Academy Award for Best Picture goodwill hunting Star and Spielberg appear to be able to bury the hatchet.
“He beat Spielberg (because Lincoln), he was at the Oscars and they were hugging each other,” Binder recalled. “I texted him, I was watching live, and I said, ‘Ben, you can throw Spielberg’s whole family in the pool tonight and get away with it. ‘About an hour later, the phone rang and it was Affleck at the Academy. He said, ‘It made me laugh so hard. ‘”
Binder continued, “I love these two guys, they’re both smarter than me, but they both act like idiots, and so do I. They’re great people, but they’re also assholes. They’re just like everyone else. Steven Spielberg is a genius, a great guy, but he can also be an asshole. And Ben Affleck is a great guy who can be an even bigger asshole. But by the same token, both of them can go, ‘Yeah, I can be an asshole.’ “
