Why Elsie Hewitt didn’t breastfeed her first child with Pete Davidson

Elsie Hewitt The decision not to breastfeed was made after careful consideration. Pete DavidsonDaughter Scotty.

“When people ask me if I plan to breastfeed, my thought process is layered,” the 29-year-old model wrote in an article for Vogue. Eller Published on Wednesday, February 25th. “The most important thing to me is to do what’s best for my baby. I will always do what’s best for her.”

Hewitt added that she weighed the pros and cons of breastfeeding versus formula. She shared that breastfeeding is considered the “gold standard” because it “provides antibodies, unparalleled nutrition and a powerful bond,” but is also a “physical” process for anyone going through postpartum recovery.

Hewitt acknowledged that formula is “a safe alternative,” noting that there is a preconceived notion that formula is the solution people turn to “if something goes wrong.”

“Even before I got pregnant, I was aware of the stigma attached to formula feeding,” she continued. “It took me some time to overcome the stigma and explore the moral hierarchy of breastfeeding to confirm that what’s best for me and what’s best for my baby don’t exist on different levels or rankings—they’re the same.”

Hewitt said her decision not to breastfeed was influenced by her “mental health” and “recovery.”

“Choosing not to breastfeed was an inherent guilt. My body was biologically designed to nourish my baby, and choosing not to breastfeed felt like going against something ancient, instinctive, and profoundly beautiful,” she wrote. “This feeling of guilt doesn’t go away just because formula is safe, healthy, and nutritionally complete. I still have to remind myself—and sometimes even ask others to tell me—that mental and emotional health are not separate from being a good mother.”

Hewitt added that Davidson, 32, her family and medical team did not try to influence her decision.

“I was lucky enough to not feel pressure to breastfeed from people in my life. My partner didn’t push me in any one direction,” she recalls. “My mother, who was proud to breastfeed my sisters and me, went out of her way to tell me that the decision was entirely mine. She said nothing more and her restraint meant a lot to me. The OB-GYN and hospital staff also made no attempt to convince me otherwise.”
