After a successful regular season, Bob Chesney Ready to lead the James Madison University football team to its first College Football Playoff appearance.
No. 12 Duke will travel to No. 7 Oregon on Saturday, Dec. 20, for a first-round matchup with a chance to earn a spot in the 12-team quarterfinals.
Chesney has been at the helm of JMU since 2023, but it was announced on Dec. 6 that Chesney would coach at UCLA next season.
Despite that move, he will still end up on the sidelines at Duke this year, leading JM to the playoffs.

Judging from its distinguished scholars, influential alumni, location and deep recruiting base, this is a program that can and will win at the highest level. “

Getty ImagesDuke finished the regular season with a 12-1 record, went 8-0 in conference play and captured the program’s first Sun Belt Conference championship. In addition to the conference title, these wins earned JMU a berth in the College Football Playoff and a chance to compete for the national championship.
Chesney won the 2025 Sun Belt Coach of the Year Award and was named one of 24 semifinalists for the 2025 George Munger College Coach of the Year Award.
Prior to joining JMU, Chesney brought success to the Holy Cross football program.
He served as the team’s head coach for six seasons (2018-2023) and won five consecutive Patriot League championships, a program record.
He was elected Patriot League Coach of the Year three times (2019, 2021, 2022).
He finished his Holy Cross career with a 44-21 record, including a three-year stretch of 29-8 from 2021 to 2023. (This is the best three-year period in the program’s 30 years).
Chesney made a name for himself by reaching new heights in Division II and III before continuing his success in Division I.
He began his head coaching career in 2012 at Division III Salve Regina, where he joined a program that had posted eight straight losing seasons and immediately propelled the team to a winning record. In three years there, his teams compiled a 23-9 record.
He began coaching at Assumption College (Division II) in 2013, leading the program to winning numbers every year for five years, including reaching the NCAA Division II playoffs each of the final three years.
He traveled to Holy Cross in 2018.
Chesney is married to his long-time wife Andreasince 2007. They have three children together: daughter laila and hudsonand a son, Bo.
