Cuba’s grid operator has restored intermittent power supply after the national grid collapsed on March 16. This comes as the United States imposes an oil blockade, causing the island to already suffer from shortages of fuel, food and medicine.
In recent days, small groups of residents across Havana have banged pots in protest of extended blackouts. On March 14, a series of widespread power outages lasting hours or days triggered rare violent protests in northern Cuba, where a building was set on fire.
President Donald Trump has hinted at a possible takeover of the island in recent months, saying at a White House event in early March that the island was “ready to fall.”
BBC Cuba correspondent Will Grant reports from the island.
