Antonio noted that it was “very touching to see such tenderness,” adding that he “knew it would make a beautiful photo, especially since this famous family was not facing my camera.”
“But my portraits have always been collaborative, and I have never felt comfortable taking a candid moment,” he writes. “If I took a picture, it would be a betrayal of trust and an invasion of privacy. So, I put the camera down and took a picture using just my eyes.”
Antonio continued, “After the meeting, I approached Victoria and asked if we could recreate the family embrace that I had seen from my perspective. She smiled softly and said, ‘Thank you for not taking this photo sooner. Today, I’m not here as a celebrity, I’m here as a mother. I hope you don’t mind me passing respectfully.'”
Antonio said he found Victoria’s “human response to be dignified and sincere”.
“Then, Victoria sensed I was a little disappointed and she said, ‘But David will fight back.’ So, I photographed David from behind — a naked man, no belt, no designer shirt, no designer watch,” he wrote.
