Chaos broke out on the first leg of Lionel Messi’s India tour, with fans tearing up stadium seats and throwing water bottles on the pitch after his appearance at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium was cut short.
Supporters spent up to 12,000 rupees (£100; $133) to catch a glimpse of the football star but were disappointed when he was blocked by a swarm of officials and security.
When security escorted him away about 20 minutes later, some in the crowd became hostile.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she was “deeply disturbed and shocked” by the incidents.
