US President Donald Trump said the prime ministers of Thailand and Cambodia would stop fighting “starting tonight”.
Trump made the announcement after a phone conversation with the two leaders, days after deadly border clashes that left at least 20 people dead and 500,000 displaced.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet did not comment.
However, after an earlier phone call with Trump, Channvirakul told a news conference that a ceasefire would only happen if “Cambodia ceases fire, withdraws its troops and removes all the landmines that have been planted.”
Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social that the two leaders “have agreed to stop all shootings effective tonight and return to the peace agreement we originally made with me.
“Both countries are ready to make peace and continue trade with the United States of America.”
On July 24, Cambodia fired a barrage of rockets at Thailand, which responded with airstrikes, escalating a long-standing border dispute.
After days of fierce fighting that left dozens dead, the Southeast Asian neighbors agreed to an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” brokered by Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Since then, tensions have continued to rise.
This week, violence spread to at least six provinces in northeastern Thailand and five provinces in northern and northwest Cambodia.
Since France demarcated the border between the two countries after occupying Cambodia, the two countries have had territorial sovereignty disputes on the 800-kilometer-long land border.
