Trump appoints special envoy to Greenland sparks new dispute with Denmark


Donald Trump appointed a new envoy to Greenland on Sunday, triggering a new diplomatic spat with Denmark as he said he wanted to annex the giant Arctic island.

Newly appointed envoy Jeff Landry, the Republican governor of Louisiana, said on

Greenland’s prime minister said the island must “determine our own future” and its “territorial integrity must be respected”.

The controversy surrounding his appointment comes amid growing strategic competition in the Arctic, where melting ice has opened up new shipping routes and increased access to valuable mineral resources.
