Tomorrowland, the popular European electronic dance music or EDM music festival, will host its first full-fledged Asian version in Thailand this December.
Tomorrowland said on Tuesday that Thailand was chosen because of its “growing presence on the global stage in music, innovation and experience-driven tourism.”
Founded 20 years ago by Belgian brothers Manu and Michiel Beers, Tomorrowland has become one of the most iconic EDM celebrations in the world. Its annual Belgian edition often features ambitious, creative stages and wild parties, attracting music lovers from all over the world.
Organizers expect more than 50,000 attendees per day from December 11 to 13 in the Thai seaside town of Pattaya.
Pre-registration for tickets will begin on January 8th. A “Full Madness Pass” covering three days of the festival costs 12,500 baht ($400; £300), while a single-day pass costs 5,100 baht.
Organizers say more details about the festival’s theme and line-up will be announced soon.
While Tomorrowland has held events in a number of Asian cities, this is the first time they’ve staged an entire festival on the continent, and on a similar scale to their event in Belgium.
Thailand has struck a five-year deal with Tomorrowland to host the event, which is expected to generate 21 billion baht ($673 million; £497 million) in revenue over that period, according to Thai media reports.
Bruno Vanwelsenaers, CEO of Tomorrowland, said: “Expanding Tomorrowland into new lands is a milestone that we approach with great respect and excitement… It is the beginning of a long-term story.”
In recent years, Thailand has become a serious contender in the live music scene. Last year, it hosted international music festivals such as Electric Daisy Carnival and Creamfields. Last October, Bangkok was also a stop on the world tour of Korean pop band Blackpink.
The country’s homegrown music and arts festival, Wonderfruit, is becoming a popular destination on the festival circuit, attracting tens of thousands of people each year.
