After Woods issued a statement, the PGA Tour also issued its first comments on Woods.
“Tiger Woods is a legend of our sport and his impact extends far beyond his achievements on the course,” it said.
“But most importantly, Tiger is a human being and our focus is on his health and well-being. We will continue to fully support Tiger as he takes this important step.”
The golf association’s chief executive, Brian Rolup, added: “Tiger Woods is one of the most influential figures the world of sport has ever seen.
“Over the past year, I have developed a deep appreciation for Tiger, not only for his impact on the game, but also for his friendship and the perspective he shared with me as I joined the golf industry.
“My heart goes out to him and his family as he takes this step and I have my full respect and support.”
Last week’s incident was the latest in a series of incidents involving Woods in recent years.
His marriage ended and his lucrative sponsorship deal ended after a 2009 incident in which he hit a fire hydrant, a tree and several hedges outside his home, sparking accusations of an extramarital affair.
In 2017, he was sentenced to one year of probation after pleading guilty to reckless driving. Police found Woods slumped over the steering wheel of his car near his home. Toxicology reports found he had multiple legal drugs and the active ingredient of marijuana in his system.
In 2021, Woods survived a serious accident that left him seriously injured. He has since undergone multiple surgeries and played limited games.
Last week, he competed in the TGL Indoor Golf League, his first competitive golf event in more than a year after multiple back surgeries and an Achilles tendon injury.
