Three French teenagers drown in bizarre swimming pool crash

Three teenagers died after their car skidded on the road, crashed through a wall and fell headfirst into a private swimming pool in southern France, trapping them inside.

The car was the size of a swimming pool and three teenagers, aged 14, 15 and 19, were unable to open the door and drowned.

The bizarre accident occurred in the town of Alais in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“This was truly the most horrific thing,” prosecutor Abdelkerim Greeni said. “It was not the impact of the accident that caused their deaths. They found themselves in the freezing water and could not get out. They had no chance.”

Unconfirmed reports suggest the youngest of the three victims was driving the car.

Prosecutors told AFP the accident happened on a rainy night and was the result of “an incredible series of circumstances”.

Prosecutors described how the car crashed through a low garden wall, flipped and landed “with all four wheels in the air”.

Hours later, alarms sounded and firefighters were called to drain the pool and remove the vehicle. BFMTV reported that the pool was about 1.5 m (5 feet) deep.

A damaged car was towed onto a firefighter’s truck in the morning, and video from the scene showed a collapsed wall next to a private swimming pool.

According to French reports, nitrous oxide canisters were found in the car. This substance is used by recreational users because it can make people feel relaxed, dizzy, or dizzy.

An investigation into the death has been launched. Agence France-Presse said the bodies of the three victims had been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Nimes for autopsies.
