A shipment of German ammunition was stolen from a delivery truck in the eastern town of Berg, the Defense Ministry said.
Officials spoke to Germany’s dpa news agency without specifying the amount taken. However, other reports quoted a Ministry of Defense spokesman as saying the number was closer to 20,000 rounds.
The theft is believed to have occurred after a driver from a civilian transport company contracted by the military left the truck in an unguarded parking lot on the night of November 25.
When the shipment arrived at the nearby Clausewitz barracks the next day, it was discovered that the ammunition was missing. The army has launched an investigation together with police.
Der Spiegel and other German media reported that the shipment included 10,000 rounds of live pistol ammunition, 9,900 rounds of blank ammunition for assault rifles, and smoke grenades.
Authorities have not confirmed if anyone has been arrested or identified in connection with the incident, raising security concerns about who might have access to the missing supplies.
“We take incidents of theft very seriously and this ammunition must not fall into the wrong hands,” the defense ministry told German media.
The Bundeswehr investigation will focus on why the driver failed to find a safe place to park, German public broadcaster MDR reported.
Drivers in need of similar help can reportedly call a special hotline, and it said armed forces can provide an escort if needed.
The driver left the vehicle in an unguarded parking lot and spent the night in a nearby hotel, the broadcaster said.
This is the latest in a series of similar incidents in Saxony-Anhalt.
In August, local police in Bernburg reported that 90 rounds of ammunition were missing. A few weeks ago, Eisleben police officers reported that they had lost 180 rounds of ammunition.
There are no direct links between the cases.
