The thread is creating an in-message game


The thread is a sports review on chat, starting with basketball games. A spokesperson for Meta confirmed to TechCrunch that the company is showing the game internally and that it is not available to the public.

The game was first seen by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzziwho often find unreleased products still in production. Paluzzi shared an image of a basketball game, which appears to allow users to shoot hoops by flicking their finger. The idea behind the game is to allow friends to compete to see who can score the most baskets, similar to other basketball games.

Introducing a messaging-style game could give Threads an edge over competitors like X and Bluesky, which don’t offer built-in games. It could also help Threads compete with Apple’s Messages, which supports gaming through third-party apps like GamePigeon.

As with any internal version, it is not known when or if Meta plans to release the game via Threads.

It is also worth noting that this is not the first time that Meta has investigated sports in the message, when Instagram launched it hidden emoji game in DMs last year. The goal of the game is to use your finger to move the paddle at the bottom of the screen so that the emoji of your choice will float and hit continuously. If you let an emoji fall, you lose. The idea is to compete with another person in the chat to achieve the best.

The internal version comes as Meta continues to create Threads with new content to take on its competitors. For example, the tower recently expanded its Community profile and many topics, probably intended to draw users away from Reddit and X. Plus, it added “missing text” which allows users to share their ideas and participate in discussions that are saved after 24 hours.

Although Threads boasts 400 million monthly users, it still has a way to go to X in the US, according to the data source. A Pew Research Center report released a few weeks ago. The report says that 21% of US adults said they used X, compared to only 8% who used Threads, and 4% who used Bluesky.
