On Friday, April 3, a football stadium collapsed in Peru, killing one person and injuring at least 60 others.
Police launched a rescue operation inside Alejandro Villanueva Stadium after an influx of fans left people trapped in the stands, according to authorities.
Fans of the Lima Union football team held a “flag wave” at the stadium ahead of a game scheduled for Saturday, April 4, against their biggest rivals, Varsity.
The Peruvian Professional Football League said in a statement that Saturday’s match would go ahead as planned.
The league added: “We will continue to work closely with clubs and authorities to promote a safe environment inside and outside stadiums.”
The Ministry of Health claimed that a wall inside the stadium collapsed, but both the team and police disputed the Ministry of Health’s claims.

According to video broadcast by local television, a large number of fans gathered in the south stand amid the fireworks explosion. Other videos showed what appeared to be injured people sitting in the stands inside the stadium.
According to the Peruvian Interior Ministry, 40 firefighters and 12 units were sent to the stadium “to carry out emergency rescue of people trapped in the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium.”
