The data breach at the large government technology company Conduent appears to be affecting more people than first disclosed, with the number of victims potentially reaching millions of people in the United States.
January 2025 redemption attack, which disrupted Conduent’s operations for several daysit is now known to affect at least 15.4 million people in Texas alone, which accounts for nearly half of the state’s population. Conduent said in October that 4 million people across the state were affected.
Another 10.5 million people are affected across Oregon, according to the state attorney general.
Conduent also notified thousands of people across Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and other states, according to data breach notifications seen by TechCrunch.
The stolen data includes people’s names, Social Security numbers, medical records and health insurance information.
One of today’s largest government contractors, Conduent manages and manages large amounts of personal and confidential information on behalf of large corporations, government departments, and several US states. The company he says its technology and services reach more than 100 million people in the United States through various public health systems.
When asked several questions about the data breach, Conduent spokesman Sean Collins issued a statement that did not respond to those questions, and did not say whether Conduent knows how many people have been affected by the cyberattack. The spokesman would not say whether the breach affected more than 100 million people.
Collins said the company has been working to “thoroughly search the affected files for personal information” in the breach, but would not say how many notifications the company has sent so far.
There’s a lot more to know about the breach, and the company hasn’t said much. Enough disclosed the cyberattack in Aprila few months after hackers took down the company’s systems, which caused the loss of government services in the United States.
The Safeway ransomware group he took a loan in the breach, allegedly stealing more than 8 terabytes of data.
In later SEC filingThe company said the stolen data “contains a large amount of personal information associated with our customers,” referring to its corporate and government customers.
Conduent also said that it continues to notify people whose data was stolen in the breach, and plans to finish alerting people by early 2026. The company did not provide a specific time frame.
