“Evil Little Letters” (2024)
Edith Swann (Olivia Coleman) was a devout Christian and very popular in her small English village. That’s why it was so shocking when she received some crude letters in 1920 that were filled with vulgar language that bordered on obscenity. Everyone is suspicious of her neighbor, newly arrived Irish immigrant Ross (Jesse Buckley), but she insists she is innocent. While Ross is on trial, an enterprising young police officer named Gladys (Anjana Vasan), suspecting others of intimidating Edith. Can she gather enough evidence in time to save Rose from being sentenced for a crime she didn’t commit?

Unlike most films in the genre, there’s no murder to solve; instead, the stakes are kept extremely low and played mostly for laughs. Those laughs come thanks to the comedic timing of former Oscar winner Colman and Buckley, who is this year’s front-runner for best actress for her performance in “Hamnet.” She doesn’t take herself so seriously here, and viewers who know her from her theater work will be delighted to see her play an outcast woman who doesn’t mind using a lot of expletives to make her point.
