That’s it shared that they are now offering 500,000 paid robotaxis every week. That number is small compared to its counterparts in public transportation, such as Lyft and Uber. But this is not what I found most interesting. The speed of passenger growth, new markets, and how it compares to the size of its fleet is what impressed me. Us he made a chart (which you can see below) which helps to visualize the speed.
However, this growth brings new challenges, including the possibility that robotaxis will be disabled, as many did during the blackout in California in December. It made us wonder, what happens when a robotaxi gets stuck – and who releases it?
Senior reporter Sean O’Kane dug into Waymo’s system (which includes its roadside assistance team), as well as at least six scenarios in which first responders must enter and manually drive a regular Waymo. In some cases, robotaxis have gotten stuck in the middle of emergencies: A police officer responding to a mass shooting in Austin earlier this month was diverted to first move a Waymo robotaxi off the road.
In the middle, Sean discovered that when Waymo’s vehicles got stuck, the company relied on the services of taxpayers to move their vehicles.
Depending on who you talk to, this is either unacceptable, no big deal, or somewhere in between. At a recent meeting, San Francisco’s District 4 supervisor Alan Wong he said that many of his colleagues agree that “our first responders should not be AAA.”
For those who are nervous, I would say to think about what is coming.

This is not just a Waymo story. Many companies are hoping to launch paid robotaxis in the US this year, including Travel and Zoox. Teslawhich has operations in Austin, also has big ambitions. Each company may have different systems with different levels of reliance on first responders.

A small bird nearby Uber recently shared news That’s itwhich the ride-hailing company has partnered with in several cities. According to this, it takes up to 30% longer for Waymo’s robotaxi to get somewhere compared to a human driver due to the attention the robot car needs and its tendency to avoid potential problems like unsafe left turns. (Important note: I’ve been in a lot of Waymos and these cars can turn left, but they can be difficult so it makes sense that robotaxis can avoid them.)

ZiplineThe deployment of autonomous drones in the US and the introduction of products, has been going on for years. Recently, its success in home delivery and international expansion has helped attract more investment.
The company said they also earned $200 millionadding to the latest funding announced in January. Additional funding, which included participation from the crypto investment company Paradigm, pushed Zipline’s latest Series H round to $800 million. Fidelity Management & Research, Baillie Gifford, Valor Equity Partners, and Tiger Global participated in the initial round that valued the drone startup on. $7.6 billion.
My story is about why this startup got so many interested investors. TL; DR: Its domestic growth rate exceeded forecasts in January and February, and CEO Keller Clifton said he expects that to happen in the next three months, by 2025.
Some products that impressed me…
No Trafficthe start-up of automotive software in Israel, raised $90 million in a Series C funding round led by PSG Equity, Axios reported.
Rivian received another $1 billion from The Volkswagen Group after completing one of the biggest projects under the technical partnership between the two automakers. About $750 million is coming in as investment funds. The other $250 million is either debt or convertible debt, depending on what Volkswagen Group offered to Rivian for evaluation. (The company has not made this clear.)
Shield AImanufacturer of autonomous military aircraft, earned $1.5 billion in Series G funding at a cost of $12.7 billion after financing. The deal was led by PE firm Advent and investment group JPMorganChase.

Zoox’s purpose-built robotaxis are moving on public roads Austin and Miami after almost two years of using its test cars in cities. The company plans to start offering tours in both locations later this year as part of its startup program. Note: until they are released from the feed, Zoox cannot charge for the ride.
Here are the results of my question about the Rivian and R2 robotaxi deal with Uber. As a reminder, this was a setup. Rivian plans to produce thousands of R2 robotaxis, including self-driving machines. Is this a distraction and a big risk OR is it more important to the future of the company?
About 55% of voters believe that it is a distraction, while 45% said that the search for robotaxi is very important in the future.
