The Georgia district attorney prosecuting the case confirmed that he will meet with Hughes’ family to discuss the case.
“This case is under my personal review. While we have spoken by phone, I will be meeting with the family of Jason Hughes in person early next week,” Hall County District Attorney Lee Darrow said in an email people Wednesday, March 11.
He continued: “In this case, the wishes of the family will be greatly respected and taken into consideration.”
Hughes, 40, was allegedly struck by a truck driven by his student outside his home in Gainesville, Georgia Jayden Wallace Friday, March 6th.
As part of the school’s annual prank, Wallace, 18, went to a teacher’s house with four other students to deliver toilet paper to Hughes’ home and tree.
Hughes ran out of the home and tripped, causing him to fall in front of a vehicle driven by Wallace. Wallace then knocked down Hughes, seriously injuring him.
The five teens did stop and try to help Hughes, but he ultimately died from his injuries.
After the incident, Wallace Charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving. at the same time, Elijah Owens, Aiden Harkes, Anna Luke and Ariana Cruz Both were charged with misdemeanor trespassing and littering.
Hughes’s widow, Laura Hugheslater stating that she wanted Charges against teenagers was discarded.
Laura, who is also a teacher, told new york times Her husband was “excited” by the prank and was “waiting to catch them in their act.”
She added that her family “supports the dismissal of charges against everyone involved.”
“This is a terrible tragedy and our family is determined to prevent another tragedy from happening and ruining the lives of these students,” Laura said. “This would go against Jason’s lifelong commitment to investing in the lives of these children.”
Meanwhile, Wallace and his parents broke their silence Statement about this tragedy 11 alive Tuesday, March 10th.
“Our family is deeply remorseful and saddened by this tremendous loss to the North Hall community. Jason Hughes meant the world to our son Jayden,” the family said. “He took the time to invest in Jay and showered him with love that made a lasting impact. Jay joins our family in expressing our deepest sadness and most sincere apologies to the Hughes family.”
Wallace also made his own separate comments in the statement. “I promise to live the rest of my life honoring Coach Hughes by living the example of Christ. He will never be forgotten,” he said.
If convicted, the teen faces up to 15 years in prison.
Hughes was a popular teacher in high school, one of his former students shared Insight into who he is while speaking US Weekly.
Seldon MaynorHughes, who graduated from North Hall High School in 2019, said he looks forward to the Prank Battle every year.
“Coach Hughes is always excited about this time of year,” Maynor, 22, said. “He thought it was funny.”
