Spotify is changing the way its APIs work in Developer Mode, its layer that allows developers to test their third-party apps using the platform’s APIs. These updates include an official premium account, limited test users, and the latest APIs.
The company introduced Developer Mode in 2021 allowing developers to test their apps with up to 25 users. Spotify now limits each app to just five users, and requires devs to subscribe to Premium. If developers need to make their app available to more users, they need to apply additional quota.
Spotify says the changes are aimed at preventing dangerous use of AI or automation. “Over time, advancements in automation and AI have dramatically changed the way users and developers access content, and at Spotify’s current level, these threats need to be managed on a regular basis,” the company said in a post.
The company believes that development processes are designed for people to learn and experiment with.
“For people who love sports and who do sports, this evolution means that Spotify will continue to support experiments and personal projects, but within clear limits. The Development Process provides a sandbox for learning and testing. It is intentionally limited and should not be relied on as a basis for building or expanding a business on Spotify,” said the company.
The company is also reducing a number of API endpoints, including the ability to release information such as new album releases, top artists, and markets where music can be found. Devs can no longer do things like add or remove songs, albums, or audiobooks through the development API, and they can’t pull album label information, artist fan information, and artist popularity.
This decision is the latest in a series of moves Spotify has taken over the past few years to reduce the number of developers on its APIs. In November 2024, the company cut off access to the API endpoint which can reveal the listening patterns of users, including repeated music of different bands. The move also prevented developers from getting access to music design, sound, and visuals.
