hollywood reporter After publishing an article reflecting on a journalist’s experience of having dinner with him in 2015, he received mixed reviews Rob Reiner, Michelle Singer Rainer and Nick Lehner.
This Reporter’s Notebook article published on Monday, December 15th has an author Steven Zechik Thinking back to the moment ten years ago when he “sat down to eat” with his family.

The subtitle tells readers that the experience took place at a restaurant in Toronto. Elsewhere in the story, it was revealed that Zechik sat with his family at the premiere be charlie 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. The film is a semi-autobiographical story of Nick’s battle with drug addiction and was directed by his father.
After the article reached X, some fans were quick to criticize the outlet for publishing the article.
One social media user wrote: “I started reading this article last night and I immediately felt sick as if I was participating in something disgusting and opportunistic, I’m glad everyone else agrees with this.” Some called it a “depraved” and “exploitative” move THR.
“It feels so disrespectful that this article is using a dinner from 10 years ago to speculate on what happened,” another wrote. “It feels like the focus right now is completely wrong.”
Social media users, on the other hand, showered praise on Zechik for the experience he shared with his family.
One X user said, “This is a better article about him, humanity and all,” while others said it was an “extraordinary” article.
“So well written,” another social media user shared. “It’s so horrible to have this pain go on for so many years and then have it end like this. Unbelievable.”
Most of the social media reactions were back-and-forth, with some expressing hatred for the post and others thanking Zechik for his honest account of Rob, Michelle, and Nick’s dynamic.
Zechik wrote in his article that he has “replayed every moment of that (dinner) in my mind” since the news broke. Rob and Michelle pass away Sunday, December 14, at the ages of 78 and 68 respectively.

Zechik explained that his dinner with the Lehner family “didn’t have any sign of a particularly bad outcome” — but that’s how it ended. The reporter also recalled feeling “uneasy” after the conversation ended.
“I could see their helplessness. The failure of the parents. The futility. The irony was painful for me, and I can only imagine, for Rob Reiner as well. Here was this country’s storyteller unable to finish the story the way he wanted to,” he wrote. “Characters resist our keystrokes. We are all agents of our own stories, but not their authors. Even the people who shape some of the best stories can’t be their authors.”
