cleveland browns rookie Sherdel Sanders Officially getting his first win as starting quarterback, he used the opportunity to get back at his haters.
After Cleveland beats its opponent Las Vegas Raiders, 24-10Sanders, 23, told reporters on the road Sunday, Nov. 23, that he knew the fans weren’t looking for excuses as he gets into his usual appetizers Dillon Gabrielshoes.
“Nobody cares if it’s a week of preparation,” he said. “Who cares? So, a lot of people want to see me fail – it’s not going to happen. It’s not going to happen.”
Sanders’ numbers weren’t overwhelming, completing just 11 of 20 passes for 209 yards, a touchdown and an interception. But it was enough for him to become the Browns’ first rookie quarterback to win a starting job since 1995.
The battle for the Cleveland Browns backup quarterback job has turned into a soap opera involving the team’s two young draft picks. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday, Aug. 18 that the Browns will name veteran quarterback Joe Flacco the starting quarterback for the team’s Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. “Everyone starts in a different place,” Sanders said. “Like I said, just because I didn’t get the summer reps, just because I wasn’t at my best and ready from a summer perspective to go out there and perform – that’s life. Everybody’s not at their best. But that’s no excuse. Gotta go out and perform. There’s no choice. No question.”
Meanwhile, Gabriel, 24, is still receiving concussion treatment and returned to training two days before the game.
Gabriel will likely be cleared to play when the Browns take the field again on Sunday, Nov. 30 against the San Francisco 49ers, but head coach Kevin Stefanski No starting quarterback will be committed.
“I’m not going to talk about it,” he told reporters after the game. “Obviously I’m proud of (Sanders). I’m proud of this offense and there’s a lot to learn. But I’ll be worried today.”
Stefanski, 43, continued: “I think you saw a lot of great work from Scheidel on the court today. I wanted to do that (finish it) Isaiah Bond) when we were out of coverage, outside of plan, getting the ball down the field. So, he’s doing a lot of things well and there’s a lot of things that he needs to work on, and that’s why I admire young guys who want to get better. “
Sanders told cbs sports Before the game, he viewed the start as a chance to prove he was “the guy (the Browns) have been looking for.”
“I’m just grateful to be here, to have the opportunity, to be able to go out and play, go out and start,” he said. “You have no idea how surreal that feels, knowing you have the Browns on your shoulders and all the fans and everyone arguing with each other online and stuff like that.”
“Everyone has a different opinion about me,” he added. “That’s what it is, but I’m grateful to be here in front of you today and hopefully we can clear some things up. But there’s still a long way to go. It’s made me grow and I know it’s just one path and the only way is up.”
