Russia airstrikes in Ukraine, talks to end war with US continue

Russia launched drone and missile attacks on Ukraine overnight, killing one person and wounding 23 others, even as it participated in talks with the United States aimed at ending the war.

The mayor of Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, said a “large-scale enemy attack” left one person dead and four injured, while the mayor of Kharkiv reported that 19 people were injured in sustained attacks on the city.

Delegations from Russia, Ukraine and the United States are meeting in Abu Dhabi for the first trilateral talks since the Kremlin launched a full-scale invasion of its neighbor in 2022.

One source told the BBC that some progress had been made but key territorial issues remained unresolved.

Russia occupies about 20% of Ukraine, including parts of the eastern Donbass region. The Kremlin wants Ukraine to hand over large swaths of territory. Ukraine has ruled out this possibility.

As trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi entered their second day, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that three of the four injured had been hospitalized.

He added that critical infrastructure in the capital had been damaged, leaving 6,000 buildings without heat.

With temperatures below freezing in Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a statement after the attack: “The main target of the Russians is energy infrastructure.”

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said 19 people were injured in the strike early Saturday morning. A maternity hospital and a hostel for displaced persons were damaged.
