“While warming up in the gym this morning, I felt a slight stabbing pain in my back,” McIlroy said in a statement on Saturday, March 7. “When I started hitting balls on the range before games, it got worse and developed into muscle spasms in my lower back.”
He added, “Unfortunately, I was unable to continue and had to withdraw. I am excited to compete this weekend. I wish the Arnold Palmer Invitational every success and look forward to returning next year.”
McIlroy, 36, shot a 4-under 68 in the second round on Friday, March 6 to move into the top 10 of the tournament leaderboard in Orlando, Florida. He withdrew from the game about 30 minutes before kick-off on Saturday.

I fought back a few times because it got to me, but we tried to handle everything that came our way with grace and composure, and for the most part, I felt like we did that.”
